Aircraft operations during haze: CAAM status update
The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) has issued Advisory Information 14/2026 to improve situational awareness and outline operational precautions during haze conditions.
As of 9 October 2026, CAAM reported unhealthy Air Pollutant Index levels at monitoring stations across Malaysia. Aircraft arrivals and departures at Malaysian aerodromes were continuing without significant disruption at the time of issuance.
Visibility, approach and fuel planning precautions
CAAM said haze may affect visibility, Runway Visual Range, approaches, landings, take-offs and ground movements. Where operating minima cannot be met, conditions may lead to missed approaches, diversions or delays.
Operators, dispatchers and flight crews should account for increased spacing, airborne holding, missed approaches, diversions and additional fuel requirements during flight planning. Planned fuel and reserves should remain adequate for prevailing conditions and suitable alternate aerodromes.
Flight crews must monitor METAR, TAF and real-time RVR reports and maintain instrument flying discipline. CAAM states that crews must positively identify the runway environment before descending below the applicable decision or minimum descent altitude or height.
ATC and ramp safety measures during unhealthy API
Airfield and approach lighting may be used during daytime to support runway acquisition, while air traffic control may apply greater separation between arriving and departing aircraft if visibility deteriorates.
CAAM advises ground handlers, engineers and ramp personnel to monitor official API updates, reduce non-essential heavy outdoor work where practical, use suitable respiratory protection such as well-fitting N95 masks, remain hydrated and report health symptoms promptly.
The advisory applies to airlines, flight crews, ground handling agencies and air navigation service providers. This Aviation Malaysia report reflects the operational and occupational precautions set out by CAAM.
