CAAM hosts ASEAN CORSIA implementation workshop
The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) organised an ASEAN workshop in Kuala Lumpur focused on strengthening regional readiness for the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation.
The workshop was supported by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency under the EU-ASEAN Sustainable Connectivity Package Aviation Partnership Project.
Workshop brings together regional aviation stakeholders
CAAM said the two-day workshop brought together 85 participants from across ASEAN in Kuala Lumpur, with more than 100 additional participants joining virtually.
The programme was designed to help ASEAN Member States move from awareness to implementation by strengthening technical capacity for effective participation in CORSIA.
CORSIA first phase creates regional implementation needs
According to CAAM, ASEAN operators are expected to offset between 10 and 12 million tonnes of carbon dioxide during the CORSIA First Phase from 2024 to 2026.
CAAM also noted that demand for high-integrity carbon credits during the First Phase is projected to reach at least 200 million tonnes, representing an estimated market value of about US$4 billion or RM15.8 billion.
CAAM links readiness work to sustainable aviation goals
The event was officiated by the European Union Ambassador to Malaysia, Rafael Daerr, and CAAM Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Captain Norazman Mahmud.
The announcement highlights CAAM’s role in supporting ASEAN aviation sustainability, carbon-market readiness and implementation of international climate obligations.
