CAAM uses Direct Route Operations to support efficient airspace management
The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) has highlighted Direct Route Operations (DRO) as part of its efforts to enhance air navigation efficiency and optimise fuel use.
CAAM said the initiative supports safe, efficient and sustainable air travel by reducing unnecessary route constraints where operationally suitable.
Performance-Based Navigation supports more predictable routing
According to CAAM, the initiative is underpinned by Performance-Based Navigation, which improves flight predictability and operational precision.
The approach enables more efficient fuel planning and reduces the need for tactical air traffic control interventions, supporting overall air traffic management performance.
DRO implemented in Kuala Lumpur FIR with trials in Kota Kinabalu FIR
CAAM stated that Direct Route Operations have been fully implemented within the Kuala Lumpur Flight Information Region.
Operational trials are currently underway in the Kota Kinabalu Flight Information Region as part of a phased and structured deployment approach.
Future expansion includes User Preferred Routes
As Malaysia progresses towards full Free Route Airspace implementation, CAAM said it will continue expanding DRO capabilities and introducing User Preferred Routes.
CAAM said the work is intended to enhance flexibility, efficiency and sustainability in national airspace management.
